Every day you probably hear health and diet information delivered as gospel by doctors and scientists from the most respected institutions in the country. The rules of the media game typically require that the experts brought into the spotlight will be parroting the same information you’ve already heard thousand of times before. This is especially true when it comes to fats.
But Bill Maher isn’t afraid of rocking the boat. On Friday May 22, 2020, when one of the few in big media willing to talk about the relationship between diet and health like a grown-up, Bill Maher, invited me onto Real-Time to share some truth. Most Folks Don’t Know They’re Eating Seed Oils
The average American gets 80% of their fat calories from seed oils, which are high in unstable fatty acids that break down into toxins when you cook with them and when you eat them for years and years. This problem is pushed under the rug and nobody is talking about it. The American Heart Association wants to keep it that way.
Seed Oil Weaken Your Immune System
The virus is not what’s killing most of us under the age of 65. For the elderly, or for those who are otherwise immunocompromised, the sheer viral load can be too much for the body to deal with. But for the rest of us, the real threat is not the virus itself, but the way your body responds.
Most of the folks under 65 who have to be admitted to the ICU are there because their body fat is full of inflammation-promoting high-PUFA seed oils. In other words, if seed oils were removed from the equation, then there would be nobody under 65 in the ICU unless they’ve got a rare immune deficiency disorder or are in the middle of chemo for cancer or have something else very serious that’s going on.
What I’m talking about goes way beyond flattening the curve; the sheer volume of the curve would be reduced. If the Hateful 8 weren’t disrupting our metabolisms and forcing our immune system to produce dangerous levels of inflammation, kids are still at school, restaurants are still opened and people are still going to work.
During the interview with Bill Maher, I also made the point that everyone under 65 who had a serious case of corona also has an underlying metabolic condition–whether they know it or not. Even those thin people who’ve written articles about their experience, like Mara Gay, a reporter for the NY Times who looks glowingly healthy.
As fit and beautiful as she appears in the NY Times piece, it’s unlikely her metabolism is in good shape. Your metabolism has to be very damaged indeed for it to cause visible signs of poor health. But it doesn’t have to be particularly damaged for it to fail you when the time comes for your immune system to rise to the challenges involved in what may be the ultimate metabolic test: fending off potentially deadly infections.
I’m so sure that seed oils are the underlying cause of metabolic disruption that I’m calling for a challenge. Show me a single person under 65 without a serious underlying disease or immune deficiency who ended up in the ICU who had been categorically avoiding vegetable oils for the prior 5 years and you’ve proven me wrong.
Keep in mind, I’m not just talking about avoiding trans fats from hydrogenated oils, which a lot of people think are the only bad fats to pay attention to. I’m talking any of the Hateful 8, hydrogenated or not.
Your Immune System Needs You to Be Metabolically Fit
Doctors are so poorly trained in metabolic disease that most can’t begin to appreciate how powerful the wrong dietary advice they typically dish out is disrupting your health. We tell you to avoid saturated fat and when you do you’re going to end up eating unhealthy amounts of PUFA. And so most doctors unknowingly give out nutritional advice that only makes people sicker. When our dietary advice fails to help our patients, we sometimes avoid the subject altogether by ignoring abnormal lab results and telling you “all your tests came back normal.”
That’s my best explanation for why half the adults in this country with metabolic conditions like fatty liver and prediabetes aren’t told they have the condition, and therefore don’t have any reason to believe they’re at risk for additional complications of metabolic diseases or at risk of suffering from serious infections.
Many other common conditions are also metabolic. For example, if you’re a person who suffers from frequent migraines, seasonal allergies, occasional asthma, you almost certainly have an unhealthy metabolism. These seemingly minor underlying conditions are enough to make a viral pneumonia potentially life threatening.
It’s not that migraines or allergies disrupt your metabolism. It’s that the underlying condition that causes migraines, allergies, and many other seemingly unrelated metabolic illnesses, is too much PUFA in your body fat.
Most people in the ICU are not eating, and that’s when these seed oils are going to be released from your body fat–during fasting. When released into the bloodstream, these PUFAs interact with enzymes that are part of your virus-fighting, immune-response team. Their function is to promote inflammation, in fact, that’s one of the key reasons a healthy diet includes about 2-4% PUFA. But the problem is, on a modern diet with 10-20X the normal amount of PUFA, our body fat releases 10-20X more PUFA into the bloodstream, and we get 10-20X more inflammation than we normally would.
That insanely high level of inflammatory chemicals in our bloodstream, lungs and other tissues causes metabolic pandemonium. We start drowning in our own fluids and can’t oxygenate our blood. Inside our arteries and veins, the platelets that are supposed to form clots only in response to cuts instead start clotting randomly inside uninjured vessels, causing neurological problems, heart attacks and strokes. Our immune system starts mounting attacks on innocent bystander proteins, like those in our blood vessel walls, causing rashes that are the hallmark of the new Kawasaki-like, life-threatening COVID-19 complication in children and young adults.
Four Steps to Start Eliminating Seed Oils From Your Body Fat TODAY
- Make your own salad dressing. Even if you buy your organic, GMO-free dressing at Trader Joes or Whole Foods, chances are it’s made from one of the hateful eight oils. This applies even if the front of the bottle says made with olive oil. You always need to read the ingredients. So take a snapshot of this hateful 8 and keep it on your phone. Or better yet, use this one that gives a little more detail.
- Take a good look at the ingredients in what you eat. Scan anything with an ingredients list for one of the members of the Hateful 8 clan. If you want alternatives, here’s a shopping guide to finding vegetable oil free products available in some of the most common grocery stores in the USA.
- Support restaurants that refuse to use the Hateful 8. There are numerous excuses you will hear why a restaurant doesn’t use olive oil or another healthy, traditional fat. Canola is heart-healthy. We use soy instead of peanut because of peanut allergies. It’s a neutral taste that people prefer. It’s got a high smoke point. Those excuses are the best marker I know of for a chef who has lost his passion. Whenever we’ve found a chef that proudly tells you he only uses olive oil and butter, or any of the good fats, we’ve also found the food coming out of the kitchen to be absolutely the best.
- Find out how much vegetable oil is in your body fat. While there’s no direct test other than doing a subcutaneous fat biopsy and sending it to a lab for a full analysis, which you can’t do unless you’re part of a research study, you can get a decent idea of how your body fat is impacting your metabolism by finding out if you are insulin resistant. Ask your doctor for a HOMA-IR test. If he doesn’t know what it is, in most states in the USA, you can order a test yourself. Visit this website for more information and select the “Insulin sensitivity Test, HOMA-IR.” It only costs about $45. Or ask your doctor to order two tests at the same time: fasting glucose and fasting insulin level. Then plug your numbers into this calculator. And given the reality of no direct testing, I created a clinical questionnaire to aid in assessing your recovery from PUFA overload. Is a natural ingredient made from the seeds of castor oil. Is this safe? I do not understand how to categorize when I see seed oil/ something made from seeds like the above ingredient, on a non-cooking oil label, and using it as something topical is it safe?

Hello, Dr. Cate. I am wondering if things like carrot seed, oil and coriander, oil, and other essential oils that are made from the seeds are safe to use topically or internally either or. We use a lot of essential oils in our home and I’m beginning to make my own lotions and selves, and I need to know if I can include these ingredients safely a skin care product specifically but we also use them with cooking at times.

I heard you on Dave Asprey’s podcast and was inspired to learn more. When I search “hateful 8 seed oils” I come across several articles (such as this one: https://www.consumerreports.org/health/healthy-eating/do-seed-oils-make-you-sick-a1363483895/ ) that reference research, including a meta-analysis I’m sure you’ve seen: “in a review of 30 studies published in 2019 in the journal Circulation, scientists found that linoleic and arachidonic acids levels didn’t raise the risk for heart disease. In fact, those with higher amounts of linoleic acid in their bloodstream were 7 percent less likely to develop it.
“Another study published in 2018 in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition that followed nearly 2,500 men for an average of 22 years found that those with the highest blood levels of linoleic acid had a 43 percent lower risk of dying from any disease during the study period than those with the lowest. Higher blood levels of arachidonic acid reduced the risk of dying by 20 percent.”

Oh no! I just discovered that my ‘go to’ whey protein powder has sunflower lecithen. Does anyone know of a whey protein powder without PUFA’s?
Had switched to peanut oil some time ago and was amazed at just how much more digestible it seemed. Have put oil on pasta forever only to discover the peanut oil was not “heavy”! In the stomach as corn or soy seemed to be. Likely consumed two or three gallons the first year and that has dropped by half in the second year as you feel better and want less somehow. Household consumption not personal. Btw.

I am a very young 63 year old. I am vegetarian and participate in just about any and all healthy nutrition regimes. Here is my pet peeve, why is it almost impossible to find any (and I mean any) product in a Whole Foods, Sprouts, Natural Grocers or any other advertised food source market without every single ingredient list containing, Soy, Canola Oil and various seed Oils such as Sunflower seed. It is so frustrating!! 🙁 🙁 🙁
Hi Cate! Have you done any research into how these oils effect animal health? When all these warnings came out about grain-free dog food potentially causing heart health issues, veterinarian cardiologists suspected that it was due to the legumes that often replaced the grains in these suspected grain-free formulas. When you look at the ingredients of most manufactured dog food and dog treats, you’ll find that they include at least one of these seed oils though. Could this be the culprit behind the rise in dogs suffering from heart health problems?

Hi. Thanks for all the info. Confused about a few things. I’ve been making bread from baking golden linseed flour (done with vitamix) at 180 centigrade in oven with salt and water as an alternative to grain bread. Is this problematic? Also, what about making one’s own nut milk by blending nuts in vitamix then heating it in pan? And I would be extremely grateful for thoughts on nut butters and if the way they are made leads to dangerous oxididation. Many many thanks.
Would you say that skincare products that contain sunflower seed oil are still to pose a threat to the immune system? I know that our skin absorbs what we put on it, so I would assume so. However, I’ve also read that only oils that are heated at such a high temperature are when it really gets bad and releases all the toxins into your body.

Hi – Can you suggest any healthy alternatives to natural nut butters? My son is starting school and I can not send any products with any nuts. The only options I can think of are sunflower seed or pumpkin seed butters. I assume sunflower is no good, what about pumpkin? The other sunflower ingredient in my drink is: Sunflower Lecithin. I googled it and here’s what I found:

So, in conclusion, I think it’s a healthy drink, especially since I’m only drinking half a bottle a day.
There’s two good reasons I don’t recommend omega-3 supplementation. 1) Most are deteriorated and will therefore contain toxins and 2) cutting out the hateful 8 without adding any more omega-3 will raise your body’s omega-3.
I saw your list of suggested supplements, but I did not see Omega 3. A friend of mine takes hemp seed oil and says it is higher in Omega 3 than fish oil. He says it fixed his crepe skin too. I would like your thoughts on Omega 3 and hemp seed oil. Thank you.

I am a massage therapist and I use safflower oil and sunflower oil topically on clients skin for moisturizing skin benefits. Is this a problem as with ingesting these oils?

Not a big fan. They say “Highest level of monounsaturated fats and 75% less saturated fat than olive oil and avocado oil* the fact they think less saturated fat is a good thing indicates they don’t really understand the chemistry. They also say “Light, neutral taste lets the flavor of your food shine through” neutral taste means its refined, as does the high smoke point. Refining strips away nutrients, but who knows if there ever were any since we’re talking about algae, pond scum Franken food. Ever see the movie Soilent Green?

All those fake meats are basically ultra processed garbage. Second ingredient is canola oil, one of the hateful eight harmful seed oils. And let your daughter know that far more animals are killed in the growing of pea protein than would be with regeneratively raised cattle.

I appreciate your reply. However, you seem to have missed the gist of my question. Probably my fault, I type too much and may have buried the lead. I wasn’t asking how to make mayo, I already know how to do that. I was asking which “good” oil or combo you would suggest using that would impart the least flavor? With mayo or any other recipe for that matter, where soy/sun/canola is typically used for their blandness in particular.
I assume refined peanut/avocado/coconut would have the least impact on flavor, but you list them as “okay not great.” Is that strictly because they are less nutritious? Or are they actually harmful with other deleterious effects one should worry about like PUFAs and the like?

The Oatley oat milk I buy (full fat) uses rapeseed oil for the fat content. It is listed as non-GMO and no hexane processing. Obviously, it is processed somehow. Should I automatically assume that it is problematic? Per Oatley’s website: “In our US operations, we use only non-GMO canola oil that is expeller-pressed with zero hexane involved in the process.”

Like so many others, I’m here after seeing you on Bill Maher. I’ve been practicing extended water fasting for the past several months both for weight loss and the detoxing health benefits of autophagy. 2-3 week fasts followed by 2-3 weeks low carb diet. Down 40 pounds (25 to go) and feeling amazing. However the low carb diet is primarily achieved by home cooking. As such, I use a lot of mayonnaise for things like egg salad, chicken salad, etc. Imagine my dismay in finding out that the (by far) main ingredient of my favorite name brands is soybean oil. I’ve read your grocery list, but that stuff is not only prohibitively expensive, I’m worried the avocado oil will be too noticeable. Long story short, I’ve decided to make my own, which isn’t too difficult with a decent immersion blender. But which oil or combination of oils can I use to impart the least flavor? I want my mayo to taste like eggs, not avocados or olives. Or to be green for that matter. Are any of the good oils or combos good at being bland like soy or corn oil? Especially as there’s no cooking involved? What would you recommend for homemade mayo?

Whole seeds and nuts are healthy. The seed or nut ground up into butter will be healthy until it goes rancid. It’s the refining that makes the seed oils super unhealthy.

Definitely you will feel better by avoiding the Hateful 8. If you’ve not been consciously avoiding them, you’re getting them when you eat out and from most packaged products. Your hives are inflammatory and chronic pain is worsened by inflammation.
No, because it’s high in antioxidants thanks to being unrefined. It is high PUFA so it’s best not to use mustard in extended high heat cooking.

Lecithin is listed after salt, so very little would be added, not enough to worry about healthwise. There’s a suprising amount of sugar, though, a full teaspoon per tablespoon, just FYI.

I’m not a fan of protein powders. Such a non fan that when writing Deep Nutrition I considered doing a whole chapter on the topic but the book was too long already so couldn’t squeak it in. In The FATBURN Fix I discuss how these powders mostly get converted into sugar and on page 322 discuss the myth that you need to get protein around workouts or you start losing muscle.
In terms of fatty acid composition, a typical palm stearin might contain almost 50% palmitic acid and 35% oleic acid (from Wikipedia) and that means it’s ok. Apparently palm stearin is supposed to retain the vitamin A precursors, so that one gets a pass. The sunflower lecithin is not so great but usually it’s far down on the list and unlikely to be present in high enough concentration to cause problems. Snap a photo of the ingredients list and the nutrition label and post it as a comment so I can have a look and see if I can tell what’s up.

Hi Dr. Cate. I read Deep Nutrition about 4 years ago and I’m still holding the standard to this day. It definitely has had more impact on my life than any other book I’ve read. So thanks! My question is about Palm fruit Stearin. Is this a highly processed food additive or safe? I recently bought a delicious product called Seedible. It’s an organic sesame seed butter with a twist but it has palm fruit Stearin and sunflower lecithin in it. Are these okay or should I move on? Thanks

I don’t recommend very many supplements and lecithin is not one I recommend. Egg yolks are loaded with lecithin.
I’ve not seen that occur. Keep in mind, many products do have added vitamins, including protein powders so I’d double check if you have not already.

It’s been neat to see how I’ve lowered my triglycerides and I feel great. Just a question regarding allergies since I have seasonal environmental allergies and live in an agricultural area so they’ve been worst during spring time. I just take Nettle-Quercetin which helps. Refined peanut would be in the ‘ok but not great’ category. Back in the day beef tallow was the most commonly used oil in US deep fryers, as I understand. It’s cheaper than olive and would be more stable. I have heard from a couple of chefs who use olive in their deep fryers. Other options for frying include lard and bacon fat.
Yes it would but the amount is small and I couldn’t recommend stopping a medication based on that issue.

HI–Just curious, would too much of the unhealthy oils cause issues with b-12 I have since last year consistently had 1500-1585 b-12 and 5.4-5.8 folate. My internist doesn’t have a clue what this may mean. I am not taking a supplement.
Great, so no seed oils. That’s rule #1. Rule # 2 (Rules in FATBURN Fix) is don’t go crazy on sugar, so you want to figure out how much sugar is in the amount you’re gonna eat and be watchful of serving size so you get the dose of sugar accurately. Hope that helps!

I very much enjoyed your segment on Real Time last week. It was an eye opener and I am trying to read as much as I can of your blog and publications. If someone is bold enough to go on record and risk their reputation to defend their conclusion I am all in!
I live in Italy, and while have easy access to the most wonderful (and inexpensive) cold pressed extra virgin olive oils I am having trouble finding unrefined peanut oil (or similar) for frying. So I am wondering just how bad is standard peanut oil found on the grocery shelves. If you had to use a processed oil for deep frying would you recommend sticking with a variety from olives (e.g. pomace) or is refined peanut oil acceptable? Apologies if you have already addressed this in an earlier response.

This is fantastic and so true! My brother and I have luckily avoided contracting the coronavirus despite having exposure, as well as being essential workers, riding on the subway etc. We suspected metabolism health may have had something with it. Having predisposition to heart disorders and diabetes which ran in our families, since our teens we have pretty much avoided trans fats, seed oils all our lives while parents ate margarine instead of butter. I switched from margarine to butter since I was 18 and I am now a half-century old. The only alarm was my dr who said my cholesterol rose due to my increased usage of coconut oil in cooking.

Concerned when I heard you on TV Friday night, and read your article on canola oil, and another article too emphasizing the same. Huel’s article is “documented” with 38 footnotes. Their take seems to be that calling canola oil bad is old medical science. How does a non-physician, non-nutritionist like me sort out the facts? Loved your interview with Bill Maher. I have a couple conditions that my doctors can’t figure out. For almost 3 years I’ve been getting hives mostly on my arms & legs, but pretty much all over. I can break out daily, sometimes multiple times a day. They are calling it Cronic Idiopathic Urticaria. Benedryl is the only way to get rid of them. Another major condition is fibromyalgia/polymyalgia depending upon which doc I’m talking to. I’ve been getting a Kenalog shot every 4 months or so for over 10 years. I know they are not good for me but that’s what helps with the inflamation and constant pain. Do you have any suggestions? Could this be from the hateful 8? yes I do use some of those oils.

Yes, they do. I’ve listed the selections that have the lowest amount. One function of this google document is to help folks find the least worst when there are no good options.
Unrefined first pressed would be healthy to use on an occasional basis and not for extended high heat cooking. It’s still high in PUFAs, that’s why I wouldn’t use very often or for high heat.
Sesame seed oil is another example of a high PUFA oil good for occasional use in stir fry and quick stove top cooking, but not for extended high heat. It’s kind of like the candy of cooking oils, a tasty treat.
Saw you on Bill Mahre. Wife very impressed as was I. We use Sunflower oil. Are there methods whereby this oil could be safe? For example Unrefined First Cold Pressed? Or are all Sunflower oils verboten.

My peanut butter has cottonseed and rapeseed. First, I assume that means it is bad. Second, I saw grapeseed listed but not rapeseed. So I need to look for peanut butter without seed oil? Also, those two seed oils were listed under vegetable oils. Will the seed oils always be listed individually?
What about expeller pressed or cold pressed oils? Aren’t they only lightly refined? And what about hemp seed oil, which is high in omegas 3 & 6?

On the other hand I also have an interview report with Matijn Katan prof at U of Amsterdam world renown expert on diet and cardiovascular decease. Prof Katan and you are observing mater from two different angles and purposes. He ranks the oil on the basis of Sat, Poly and Mono fats and finds Canola as the best. Olive is there close to Canola. I’m 75 yr old man, relatively healthy, playing singles tennis every day against much younger folks, eating less fatty foods and less red meat. I like vegetables and fish and potatoes.
I’d be interested if you ‘d suggest that I should switch my present Canola/ Olive routine for the benefit of my immune system.

I agree it would be difficult to find a large cohort. However, thousands have stopped these oils since reading my book and similar books, so not at all impossible.
1.5-2 years for a normal weight person, possibly more if you’re overweight. That’s the hard part. But the good news is that you can start experiencing more energy the morning you build yourself a better breakfast, per the advice in FATBURN Fix

I’m not an expert on protein powders or a huge fan of protein powders, sorry to say, because they’re chemically sticky and my patients experience improvements in skin and joint health when they stop taking them. I know, I know, it means giving up your fave smoothie so it’s unlikely to happen overnight. Real food is always your best friend.
Great interview and interesting information on Bill Maher. I was looking at the label on my Orgain Protein powder and it has high oleic sunflower oil in it. And then I looked at some other Soy based protein powders including Shaklee, which also had seed oils in it. It’s really interesting on how many things do have that in it. Going forward I am going to try to eliminate as much as I can but it seems very difficult to eliminate all things with seed oils completely and forever. Do you know of any soy based protein powders that do not have any seed oils in it? Thanks for the information.
Hi Dr. Cate. I use Swiss natural Cholessterol with Vegapure in it. All the hateful 8 oils are in this supplement. I was told that this supplement vastly reduces familial cholesterol. Is this false information?

No it’s not. there is no particular nation that has the “purest” and “healthiest” olive oil. They are not necessarily the same thing “purest” is not necessarily the healthiest. I’m assuming this is a promotion of sorts but first check the acidity level and your dietary habits, make sure it is made from 100% organic olives, that means check the origin of their certificate and whether it is accredited or not. many mid-large oil producers buy olives from different suppliers in order to keep the production going. Small oil producers can not necessarily keep the same taste, tanin and tart since weather, water, insects etc all influence the taste of the olive; that is if you know what you’re looking for. So pls don’t fall for promotions of countries like Italy, Greece, Turkey, Spain,Tunisia etc. the Mediterranean is known for wily sweet grifters.

As a restaurant owner, I am curious as to what oils might be best for deep frying. From a harm reduction standpoint, is there an oil that would work well in the fryer but is perhaps not as bad as some of the others? Thank you!

Pretty sure it’s too small a sample to be meaningful. And given that doctors never ask this question of patients (even if they can breathe), this challenge will obviously never be met. I find your theory interesting and hope that studies will be done, but this challenge is meaningless.

I enjoyed your interview with Bill Maher and appreciate your candor and the information you share but I have to disagree that consuming seed oil is the only thing contributing to inflammation and metabolic disease and compromising people’s immune systems to the point that they can’t properly fight off a virus or infection. Our food supply has been so polluted by the industrialization of agriculture and the constant exposure to pesticides, GMOs, hormones and antibiotics, as well as chemicals and toxins not just in our food but in most of the products we use are certainly contributing to immune system overload –including inflammation and hormonal imbalances– and mitochondrial damage. But I agree that the filtered and incomplete stories we are being fed about “perfectly healthy” people succumbing to COVID are suspect and yes, you can appear to be very healthy on the outside and not be quite so healthy on the inside. Something all people should be paying attention to for themselves –especially now!
If that works for you that’s great. Everyone has an opinion.
Although I always appreciate having people take a closer look at their diets, I remain highly skeptical of your claims. I see this as a cause vs correlation thing, since these oils are present in junk foods, which obviously people should not be eating.
People need to take all this diet fad advice with grain of salt and go by what makes you feel good physically after eating it. If you feel like crap after eating something it’s probably not good for you.

The seeds themselves are healthy. Nature stabilizes the oils in the seed using antioxidant enzymes with mineral cofactors as well as plant phytonutrient generalist antioxidants. Those get stripped away during the refining of any oil, but particularly the high-pufa oils.
Corn of course is high in carb, so it’s super easy to overeat and if you’re on the diabetes spectrum it can be a problem for you. I talk more about how to tell if you’re on the diabetes spectrum in The FATBURN Fix
Plant based milks are processed foods, it would be much healthier to eat the whole food. Avoid rice milk, as rice is nearly devoid of nutrition.

The expeller pressed sunflower oil is one of the Hateful 8. Sorry! If a company wants to claim their seed oils are healthy, before I’m convinced I’d ask them to post the full fatty acid breakdown and describe the refining methods.

All cooking can produce toxins, but thanks to our liver, we can handle a certain amount. Olive oil stands up very well to normal cooking.

High heat cooking with olive oil is not healthy and potentially carcinogenic. I prefer avocado oil because of it’s lower heat threshold. But an avocado is also, technically, a seed. Is that bad too?
On HBO’s Real Time, you implied that coronavirus won’t hit someone who has removed “hateful eight” oils from their diet. So how do you explain Italy, the home of olive oil cooking, being bulldozed by the illness?
Completely agree. Has Dr. Cate been given access to the medical records and nutrition history of enough patients to scientifically substantiate her claims regarding young people who have suffered from a virus that’s been around for 6 months? Or any patients at all? If not, she is blowing smoke. She’s challenging us to find an example to disprove her assertions. That’s not how it works. Any assertion that is made without evidence can rightly be disregarded without evidence.

Thrive algae oil only has 0.3% Omega-3… Which allows for it’s extremely high 485 degree smoke point. I’ve been using it exclusively (with ghee) for years and I’m 40 year old male with an HDL above 100. I do have animal (love duck fat) on occasion too.

Greek olive oil is the purest and healthiest. They are obsessed with it, in a really good way. There is a law in Greece there that for oil to be labeled Greek it must contain 100% Greek olives. Other countries can call their oil “Italian” or “Spanish” but be as high as 20% “other”.

I use a little rhyme of sorts: Canola, Corn, Cotton, Sun, Soy, Saff. Repeat a few times and it will stay in your brain. Or at least it did in my case!
However, burning fields in Indonesia in order to produce palm oil ruins our climate. I try to avoid palm oil in anything.

I am a freelance features writer. I have a couple questions after seeing Dr. Cate last night on Bill Maher. I understand seed oils are a no no. What about actual sunflower seeds or popcorn. Sometimes I see soy lecithin as an ingredient, what about that? Lastly, what about plant based milks? Is there something you recommend? I try to buy ones that have true least amount of ingredients. Malk makes a great cashew milk, but any other suggestions would be great. At some point, I will be writing about this.

The labels won’t list PUFA, no. They do list saturated fat and total fat. Sadly. But they will list the ingredients. So to answer your question on the different brands you use, you can look at the ingredients for one of the hateful 8. Actually it’s only the 3C and 3S oils that you need to memorize for most products, since grapeseed and ricebran are mostly only used in restaurants.

My wife loves these snacks called “Somersaults”..sunflower seed crunchy bites. She tells me they’re healthy ish , I think they are at best a cookie. Have you heard of them or tasted one… What is your opinion of them… much appreciated..Les

Yes, vegans can avoid the hateful 8. Soybeans are healthy, as are sunflower seeds, corn, etc. It’s only by extracting, refining, bleaching, deodorizing that the resulting oil is rendered unhealthy due to 1) fewer or zero vitamins and minerals than the intact bean 2) the unstable PUFAs are oxidized so that in the bottle you’re buying roughly 2 – 5% toxin 3) the oils degrade further when heated and finally the most complex issue is 4) the percentage of PUFA in your body fat exceeds your body’s ability to control oxidation reactions. Tofu is not a problem.
You might find a coconut and olive oil based butter alternative, although I have not yet had luck myself. If you do, please come back here and let us all know!

Curious what you would say regarding Dr. Esselstyn’s science regarding Olive Oil and relation to inflammation and compromised endothelial function? Plus, the fact that olive oil is pure caloric intake and doesn’t contain any nutritional value whatsoever…? Also, why don’t vegans die from heart disease? Thanks

Dr. Cate, is it possible to do all the things you recommend while maintaining a vegan diet? Is tofu a problem? Is there a ‘butter’ alternative that is low in PUFAs (I just looked at mine earth balance and it’s got at least 2 of the hateful 8?)
I thought your article was interesting until you did this:

How rude to re-purpose this girl’s experience for your angle. Did you examine her? You don’t know anything about her metabolism or eating habits. Are you an epidemiologist? Scientists are still learning about this disease and its myriad effects on the body. I wouldn’t be so dogmatic with your claims if you want to be taken seriously. Try hedging, it’s much more believable than your variety of speculation.
I had a similar reaction. It was specifically the word “certain” that caught my attention; it erodes her credibility as a scientist.
