Lose Belly Flab in Three Weeks!! (It can be done, and here’s why you should)
Big bellies bulge when a person’s diet is particularly bad. Belly flab is an important external sign of metabolic inflammation. According to new research, even thin people with a little bit of belly flab are looking at problems down the road.
A study published this week in the Archives of Internal Medicine suggests that relatively normal weight people who add bulk in the bellies, as opposed to other places, are at nearly the same risk of dying from respiratory diseases (like asthma and pnumonia), cardiovascular diseases (like heart attack and stroke), and cancers as people who are morbidly obese.
“Even if you have a normal BMI and a big tummy then you are just as much at risk [of dying from these problems] as someone who is classified as obese with a large tummy.” –Dr David Haslam, chair of the National Obesity Forum,
The reason belly flab is particularly bad has to do with the quality of a person’s diet more than the calories. Belly flab in thin people is not under the skin, it’s from fat surrounding the intestines, called “omental fat.” It’s forms particularly rapidly when a person’s diet is loaded with harmful trans fatty acids, which are so toxic, the body can’t even absorb them properly and they cake up within the intestinal lining (the omentum).

Good point. We need to remember that omega-6 is also an essential fatty acid. While you get an awful lot eating any foods with vegetable oils or even fatty cuts of ‘torture meat,’ once you upgrade your diet your no longer have the same risk for the omega-6:omega-3 imbalances and we need to pay attention to making sure we get enough of both.
Megatrans fats are fats that are as bad for us as trans fat because they are misshapen and damage enzymes, but unlike ordinary trans fat megatrans fats can multiply quickly so a trace amount can become a huge dose of toxic fats. They exist in any polyunsaturated oil that has been processed with high heat, and this includes all vegetable oils (canola, corn, soy, sunflower, cottonseed, safflower) AND even flax, fish oil, and cod liver oils IF they have been heat processed.
Could you say more about MegaTrans? I found that one of the most important things in your book, as most people just focus on the quantity of Omega 6.

You must also avoid Megatrans fat (or “secret” trans fat) also, see chapter 8 of Deep Nutrition for details. And your are right there is more! You may be short waisted, you may need to do situps, you may be on medications or have other lifestyle factors impairing your body’s ability to trim down. I’d advise you to troubleshoot with a knowledgeable low carb health professional in your area. But don’t give up! You are going in the right direction!
I have been eating low carb (20-40g per day) for two years and the last year has been 90% paleo. Avoiding trans fats has not gotten rid of my belly fat. It seems, for some people, there must be more to it than this…
