Easy Fast Olive Oil Mayo: Save Money and Eat Tasty

  1. Rapeseed is canola, rebranded to sound better. I was told that the can refers to Canada, ola is oil but also rhymes with granola which many associated with a healthy, whole grain diet.

  2. Hello Dr. Kate,

    How do you review Mustard Oil? It’s a very common traditional oil used in India but I didn’t find it in your good/bad oil chart. We previously used to use refined Mustard Oil but now we have shifted to Cold – pressed Mustard Oil.

    1. It’s high in PUFA so cold-pressed is very important, yes. Like sesame oil, it’s not great for high heating beyond a few minutes. Best used for flavor!

  3. Your olive oil probably had a really high anti-oxidant content, which is great but it tastes bitter. There are olive oils that are more buttery and mild in flavor that will taste less bitter. I know that California Olive Ranch makes one. There are many others too.

  4. ACL repair is generally iffy at best but that opinion was generated at a sports medicine conference I attended 5 years ago. Technology may have improved.

    I have read all your books. Which led me to contact the department of health in my country.

    -I asked why vegetable oils are allowed in our food?
    -There is also a law that prohibits products containing trans-fat, that are “occurring” while in the process of making the product.
    -The answer I got (below), in short: Todays process are changed. Meaning: “Margarine and other hardened fats produced in Norway and many other countries therefore no longer contain trans fats.

    – Please Dr. Cate, I am wondering what type of new production process this is, would you happen to know? Or is it just plain lack of knowledge from there part?

    The health departments answer:
    In the margarine industry, oils are hardened, that means: unsaturated fatty acids are added to hydrogen and changed to saturated fatty acids so that the consistency becomes firmer and rancidity is prevented. Previously, the fat was cured incompletely, which has been shown to lead to the formation of trans fatty acids as a side effect. In a partial hydrogenation, part of the double bonds will be saturated, while part will be converted from cis- to trans-form.
    Previously, therefore, margarine could contain significant amounts of trans fat. The processes have now changed. Margarine and other hardened fats produced in Norway and many other countries therefore no longer contain trans fats.

    The dietary content of trans fatty acids has decreased in the last thirty years from about 4 to less than one percent of the dietary energy content. It is recommended that the dietary content of trans fatty acids does not exceed 1 energy percent. Today, most of the trans fatty acids in the diet come from dairy and meat products.

    By Norwegian law it says: That you cannot sell products, where trans-fat is (“made”)through/by the process. More in detail: “The product cannot contain more than 2 grams of trans fat per 100 grams of fat.

    1. It’s just plain lack of knowledge. Trans fats made by the process of hydrogenation actually would be less harmful than some of the aldehydes and other toxins that form while using high PUFA cooking oils. Then there’s the other issue of PUFA building up in our body fat. Most of the health leadership world just does not understand the necessary chemistry.

  6. Several prominent cooking series use rapeseed oil. If taken in moderation, how does this stack up with olive oil?

  7. If you are worried, you can stop and see how you do (you may have a week of headaches due to withdrawal. That’s the best test. If you’re not ready for that, try cutting back to 2 cups per day. It’s unlikely to cause secret problems, however. The problems should be obvious. My dad had been a 16 cup per day coffee drinker for more than half a century and has donated a kidney to my brother, both kidneys are doing great in spite of the caffeine!

  8. Updated data: 165,000 covid deaths as of 8-5-20 and the year isn’t over. 2nd spike of case #s in late July was higher than the 1st. The 2018 flu season was the worst in 40 years with 40,000 deaths, so much worse now. The pandemic a century ago killed 500,000 in 2 years. We’re headed there even with modern medical intervention. Government orders alone don’t open or close the economy: it’s peoples willingness to participate (viz. monthly consumer spending data). They were staying home even before government orders. It would be interesting to see good correlational studies between lifestyle (including diet, exercise, smoking) and covid.

  9. I love the podcast and hope you have more episodes soon. I bought and read both of your books after watching you on Bill Maher. Thank you for the actual science in your books- so many dietary guides have a superficial explanation as to the how and why something should be done and how it works. I have removed seed oils from my diet and adhere largely to the guidelines laid out in The Fat Burn Fix- I have lost 13 pounds with only diet changes. There are days when I don’t feel hungry and a simple high protein – good fat snack will carry me through to the next day. My family is plagued with liver disease, cancer and diabetes. Both of my parents are obese and I was having a hard time getting to a healthier BMI after my second child was born. Your guidance has been amazing. My husband and children are getting off the sugars and vegetable oils and I have referred multiple people to your books. I hope more doctors are like you and actually try to help their patients discover just how much control they have over their health.

  11. Great podcast! I shared with multiple people already. The more I read about the relationship between metabolic health, and inflammation and how it relates to coronavirus the more it makes sense to eliminate these bad seed oils from your diet that are toxic for your body & cause high levels of inflammation. I’ve eliminated these oils in my diet for 2 months now and feel great.

  13. Hello Dr. Cate, I read fat burn fix back in March and I have been following the guides from the book ever since. I have felt much better since switching over my eating habits. I have been able to lower my BP significantly and plan to have a check up soon to see if I can get off my medication. My wife has crohns disease. She’s had two resection surgeries over the past 10 years and is now on the autoimmune biologic Stelara. With all this being said, I have two questions – #1. I know hypertension makes a person more susceptible to COVID, but is it the hypertension itself or the actual BP medication that makes the person susceptible? I’ve heard conflicting arguments. #2. do you think a fat/burn fix diet is appropriate for someone with crohns? and if so, do you think a traditional gastro doctor would be opposed to this new change? thx in advance.

  15. Dr. Cate , you and Carl Sagen are the only people who have change the course of my life . I am grateful to you for unlocking the keys to my struggles with weight and health. I read your book , and given copies to friends who themselves are following the advice. I started removing the seed oils and sugar from my diet in early June , I do feel for energetic and my usual craving for potato chip and crackers have subsided. I do know my metabolism is broken and I am carrying lots of body fat full of seed oils, how can I tell when my I have repaired my metabolism? How long should I expect it to take, and will I only be free of the effects of inflammation when I burn off all my body fat?

  17. Great that you’re avoiding the seed oils! In addition:
    1. Fermented foods ( I have 1-2 oz kimchi daily)
    2. No snacking
    3. Check your macros and overall nutrition variety at cronometer.com, its my fave nutrition app!
    4. Make sure you prioritize sleep by sticking to a regular routine

  18. I loved your first podcast as well as your books and website. I am worried about getting COVD because I have developed hypertension. My blood pressure went up significantly in the last 6 months. I have always been very active and athletic. A recent ACL surgery kept me from working out the way I normally would. At the same time I am going through menopause ( just turned 55). I am additionally concerned because my glucose levels are also above 100. I happen to run across an old blood test from 2003 where my glucose was below 100 and I weighed 20 pounds less! Yikes. I can’t seem to lose weight. I do my best to eat healthy and have avoided seed oils for a long time. I am back to working out regularly. I am debating going back on Amy Myer’s cleanse (Paleo) and your Phase I program. I am taking losartan HCTZ 50-12.5 mg which has brought down my blood pressure to 116/70. I also take Vitamin D, Zinc, Magnesium and a multi vitamin – all as per your recommendations. Is there anything else I can do to keep myself healthy and my immune system in check?

  19. Hi Dr. Cate! Loved the first episode. So, I read the Fatburn Fix and have done my best to follow all of your suggestions. I’ve totally eliminated the Hateful Eight in all of it’s forms. With Covid, my wife and I never go out to eat and we prepare all of our meals at home. We only use butter, EVOO, Avocado or Coconut oil. We check all of our labels too! We now use Primal Avocado Oil Mayo for example. I exercise regularly on Mon, Wed and Fri; a combined jog/walk working myself up to be able to run a 5K. I also IF those days and usually eat my first meal around noon. We go to bed at 9:00 and get up at 5:00. The one issue in the back of my mind, however, is my struggle with high cholesterol and triglycerides. Heart disease runs in my family as well. My doctor has always suggested to eat less “fatty” foods etc. It was definitely a mindset change for me after seeing you on Bill Maher and reading your book. Then, my sister recommended I watch “What the Health.” I realize that is probably delivered with a biased bent but was curious to get your opinion. All in all, I feel much healthier and I have definitely lost weight; nothing better than fitting comfortably into clothes again! Stay well!

  20. Yes definitely. Also possibly liver and/or liver pills, they seem to help support bone marrow health in my experience.

  21. Hi Dr. Cate. Great first show today! My dad has MGUS and his numbers have been under control for a few years, nice and stable. Do you think if he cut out the hateful 8, he could see improvements there? He’s otherwise very healthy and still feels great!

  23. Hi Dr. Cate! I just listened and was scared–again–off seed oils. I have two questions: 1) I love to treat myself to the occasional batch of fries when I go out to eat. Is having them, even infrequently, that bad? 2) What about soy milk? Is that as bad as soy oil? Thanks!
