Menopause Symptoms Weren’t Always Common
In the early 2000s, I was living in Kauai and working at the Kalaheo clinic as a family doc. At the time, I didn’t realize it—but I had a window into the past, a perspective on menopause that’s now almost impossible to find.
Among my patients who were born and raised on the island, mostly women of Filipino, Japanese, and mixed Asian ancestry, menopause was typically uneventful. Their periods didn’t taper into years of unpredictable irregularity, miserable heavy bleeding, or endless spotting. One day, it was simply gone. No hot flashes. No insomnia. No mood swings.
In contrast, the majority of mainland transplants, primarily Caucasian and Hispanic women, had a completely different experience. Symptoms ranged from disruptive to severe.

Saved my life
I would like to thank you for literally saving my life. Back in February, I had to be hospitalized while on vacation in Phoenix with an A1C of 11% and had to start taking 2 types of insulin and 2 other meds. I read the Fatburn Fix in April, and followed the program to a tee, and I’m down by 15 pounds, 6.8 A1C, and only one once weekly diabetes medicine. Prior to reading the book, it was almost impossible for me to lose weight as a diabetic.

I feel free
For the last month, I have really been reading all labels on everything. I have completely remove those 8 oils you talk about. I must tell you, I feel great! I have more energy and I am now 197 lbs (have always been around 205 to 210lbs). I eat potatoes with real butter, grass fed steak, pasta with the right toppings. I eat everything! I seem to crave less sugar. I love it!

My allergies disappeared
The biggest difference for me (and a surprising one) is that my allergies have almost completely disappeared! This is a big deal for me, because I’ve had allergies most of my life and they have often affected what I do which is a teaching music in [a public school district]. In general, I feel much better and have more consistent energy throughout the day.

Heart Palpitations have Stopped
I’ve lost 20+ pounds (also fasting 16-24 hours daily) and haven’t had palpitations except for one occasion — I had a mini bag of Fritos for the first time in July. And, I feel better now on a daily basis than I ever did all through college.

Lost 20 lbs I could never shed
I love your Fatburn Fix! Has helped me so so much! I have had the dreaded weight all my life - 20 or so pounds I could never shed. I have lost that now. I only eat 2 meals a day lunch and dinner with a glass of milk or cappuccino around 4 to hold me over. No snacking and not bad oils. It has been the key to unlocking my fatburn. I work out in the am and believe I am burning fat for energy not from food!

> Tears of joy
I'm crying tears of joy and appreciation for all you've done for me and my health! Without Deep Nutrition and Fatburn Fix, I would literally still be in the vicious cycle I'd been fighting all my life! In a nutshell - I am no longer a compulsive overeating addict suffering under the crushing 'thumb' of all food and alcohol.
Penni Wicks
- One patient developed intense anger outbursts that ultimately cost her job
- Another went months with fragmented sleep, lost her libido, and these disruptions reverberated into her relationship with her husband and children
- Many experienced daily hot flashes with sweating, flushing, and sudden waves of dizziness or instability, as if the ground had briefly dropped beneath them
These symptoms were often partially relieved with hormone therapy. My local patients, by contrast, didn’t want—or need—any treatment at all.
What Causes Menopause Symptoms? Genetics, Soy, or Something Else?
The pattern was consistent enough that I couldn’t help but notice, and of course, then my brain started noodling on the why of it. Others had made the same observation, and the answer I saw most often in the literature was genetics. But that never fully satisfied me. If genes were the problem, then why did so many non-Asian races all end up with pretty much equal chances of the entire spectrum of menopausal symptoms?
Another even sillier explanation was that Asians eat a lot of soybeans, and the plant estrogens supplied enough hormone activity that women didn’t experience these symptoms. But that didn’t make physiologic sense either. Those estrogens would surely have disruptive effects on fertility, particularly in men. Besides, my Filipino patients were not eating any more soy than my caucasian patients. So that couldn’t be the reason.
Most Menopause Symptoms Are Driven by Metabolism
Even then, I suspected the difference had something to do with diet and metabolism. I had already seen how modern processed foods were driving inflammation and metabolic dysfunction in my patients.
But I didn’t yet have a complete framework.
It wasn’t until I later developed the concepts in The FatBurn Fix that the biology became clear: menopause symptoms are not simply hormonal—they are metabolic.
And over the course of my career, something changed.
What used to be relatively uncommon has become the norm.
Why Menopause Symptoms Are Worse Today: The Role of Seed Oils and Processed Foods
Over the past several decades, one dietary shift stands out:
- Seed oil consumption has nearly doubled in the past 20 years
- It has tripled since the 1980s
- And quadrupled since the 1960s
The eight seed oils I’ve identified as the Hateful Eight are unique in the food world. They are not like anything else in the food supply. And over the past few generations, they have become embedded in nearly every category of processed food. The average person gets 20-30 percent of their daily calories from these oils.
This matters because they don’t just add calories. They alter how our metabolism works.
Seed oils aren’t the only part of the problem—but they are a central one.
Modern processed foods also rely heavily on refined flours and added sugars, which trigger excessive insulin release, and that results in blood sugar crashes. Together, these ingredients create a perfect storm: unstable fuel coming in, and a reduced ability to burn stored fuel between meals.
That combination is what drives the metabolic instability behind many menopause symptoms.
How Blood Sugar Instability Triggers Menopause Symptoms
Here’s the key mechanism connecting diet to menopause symptoms:
Seed oils promote oxidative stress, depleting the antioxidants our cells rely on for efficient energy production. Their unstable fatty acids (polyunsaturated fatty acids) also accumulate in human body fat. This combination is a one-two punch to our mitochondria, which generate energy in our cells. Over time, our mitochondria lose the ability to burn our body fat. This makes our bodies abnormally dependent on blood sugar for energy, and ties our energy level and our well-being to our blood sugar level.
That becomes a critical liability during menopause.
Between meals—and especially overnight—your body is supposed to rely on stored fat for energy. This ability to go from burning food to burning our body fat is called metabolic flexibility. It keeps our blood sugar from crashing and keeps the brain continuously fueled.
But when fat-burning is impaired, that switch isn’t so seamless. Instead, blood sugar drops. Falling blood sugar in this setting becomes an energy crisis for the brain, triggering the brain’s panic system. Adrenaline surges. And that’s when symptoms appear.
This metabolic state has a name: insulin resistance. It means the body has lost its ability to efficiently switch between burning food and burning stored fat. As a result, blood sugar becomes less stable, and the body becomes increasingly reliant on stress hormones like adrenaline to maintain energy.
Why It Feels Like a “Hot Flash”
We often hear that a hot flash is a temperature sensitivity problem. That’s part of it. The other big part is the stress response. In this case, the stress is not external; it’s internal, due to the effects of seed oil on our metabolism that cause blood sugar instability.
When adrenaline surges, it can cause:
- Sudden warmth and flushing
- Sweating
- A racing or pounding heart
- Anxiety or a sense of unease
- Dizziness or instability
In other words, what many women experience as a “hot flash” is actually a metabolic stress signal.
Why Menopause Makes It Worse
This same blood sugar instability can occur earlier in life.
But menopause changes your sensitivity to it.
After menopause, the brain becomes more sensitive to fluctuations in blood sugar and more reactive to stress hormones like adrenaline and cortisol. At the same time, hormonal shifts reduce the buffering systems that previously helped stabilize energy and mood. As a result, what once registered as mild hunger or irritability can now escalate into:
- Intense hot flashes
- Sleep disruption
- Anxiety surges
- Mood swings
Menopause doesn’t create the problem—it amplifies it. If this mechanism is correct, then stabilizing blood sugar with a diet that reverses the metabolic problems seed oils cause should reduce or eliminate many menopause symptoms. And that’s exactly what I’ve heard over and over again from patients who’ve worked with me 1:1, and readers of The FatBurn Fix who have healed their metabolic issues by changing their diet.
Fixing Insulin Resistance Helps Other Menopause-Related Health Changes
Insulin resistance—and the diet that drives it, rich in seed oils, refined flours, and added sugars—causes far more misery than hot flashes, mood swings, and sleep disruption. It also plays a role in many of the other changes women experience during menopause: loss of muscle, increasing visceral fat, shifts in thyroid function, changes in gut health, bone loss, and even memory problems.
When you address the underlying metabolic dysfunction, you’re not just addressing menopause symptoms—you’re improving the systems that regulate energy, resilience, and repair throughout the body.
In that sense, supporting your metabolism doesn’t just make menopause easier. It helps slow the processes we associate with aging itself. In fact, I challenge anyone to find a better anti-aging “hack” than reversing insulin resistance and restoring a healthy metabolism.
