Effectively preventing atherosclerosis with drugs or diet requires understanding it. Right now, doctors know that oxidation has something to do with atherosclerosis, but we can’t explain what “LDL becomes oxidized by an unknown mechanism.” We’re looking at LDL as if it’s a bad guy, but we need to start look at what it’s carrying, specifically the kinds of fatty acids. This presentation will explain what chemists have been trying to tell us for years about the role of various fatty acids in initiating oxidation in LDL and other lipoprotein particles.
